2 Families of Bigg’s Killer Whale Feeding along Orcas Island

Haleigh | M/V Sea Lion | July 20, 2021 | 2:00pm

For our afternoon Classic whale watching trip, the boat full of excited passengers was just the beginning to a great day! We headed inter-island to follow a report of some Bigg’s Killer Whales in Rosario Strait. Bigg’s Killer Whales are a marine mammal-eating ecotype found in the Salish Sea. They primarily feed on Harbor Seals, though will also hunt Harbor Porpoise, sea lions, and the occasional baleen whale calf. Due to the abundance...

15 Bigg’s Killer Whales Traveling around Lopez Island

Haleigh | M/V Sea Lion | July 20, 2021 | 10:00am

One of the fun parts about morning trips is you get to really be a part of the search for whales. None of the whales in our area are tagged, so we rely on visual sightings to search for any wildlife out here. Fortunately, sightings by other boats are shared through the Pacific Whale Watch Association’s online network. As we left the harbor on our Tuesday morning trip, we decided to start our search southbound.

When searching for...

The Best Kind of Mugging by 2 Bigg’s Killer Whales

Haleigh | M/V Osprey | June 24, 2021 | 5:30pm

I’ll likely say this throughout the summer -- sunsets are the absolute best time to be on the water. As we leave the dock and pass in and around the islands, everything around us is either sparkling or glowing. Tonight’s excursion lived up to the magic.

Our beginning route led us eastbound on an inter-island expedition. We were following prior reports of a “T-Party” traveling through the San Juan Channel. Bigg’s Killer Whales are...

Southern Resident Killer Whales Fish off of False Bay!

Erick | M/V Sea Lion | Saturday, September 19, 2020 | 1:00 PM

The skies finally cleared today when Captain Sarah and I ventured out to search for wildlife in the Salish Sea. We headed south after getting reports that the Southern Residents had been spotted near the southern end of San Juan Island! As we headed down, we made a stop at Whale Rocks to look at the Steller Sea Lions and the Harbor Seals. After looking at those growly pinnipeds we continued on our way and headed...

Trip to Deception Pass and Watching the T37A Bigg's Orcas Hunt!

Erick | M/V Kestrel | Wednesday, September 9, 2020 | 2:00PM

September is here! This is one of my favorite months here. Things slow down quickly after Labor Day and the weather seemingly steels itself for the coming autumn. Captain Brian and I took a group out on M/V Kestrel on this warm and calm Wednesday. We headed inter-island to head towards a report of Orcas in between Whidbey Island and the mainland. We cruised in between Lopez and Blakely Islands, crossed Rosario Strait and...

Southern Resident Killer Whales near San Juan Island

Sarah | 09/05/2020 | M/V Kestrel | 10:00am & 02:00pm

We had quite the day on the Salish Sea! With early-morning shore-reports of orcas heading into some fog around San Juan Island, Captain Gabe and I left the harbor for our first tour hoping that we could find those elusive animals.

We decided to head south towards Cattle Pass, enjoying some surfacing harbor porpoises in Griffin Bay along the way. We stopped at Whale Rocks to check out some Steller’s sea lions hauled out on the...

Bigg's Orcas

Found the T65B's (Bigg's Orcas) near Lopez Island!

Erick | M/V Sea Lion | September 2, 2020 | 1:30 PM

We have come to my favorite time of the year in the San Juan Islands! As summer ends and we inch closer to fall the world starts to slow even more down here. All the historic orchards are heavy with fruit, the last native berries are just finishing their ripening, and the crickets are ever louder in the mornings and evenings. We are usually greeted each morning by a thick fog bank moving over the islands and then the sun starts to...

Bigg's Orcas Hunt around White Rock! (T37A's)

Erick | Kestrel | 2:00PM | August 28, 2020

As August comes to a close, we have had a couple of great weather days. Captain Gabe and I took a great group of guests out to look for exciting wildlife in the Salish Sea. We headed north where there was a group of orcas spotted. We met up with them around White Rock near Flattop Island. It was a family of Bigg’s (formerly known as Transient) Orcas! This family was the T37A’s! This is a great family with five members. As they approached...

Bigg's Orcas travel in Haro Strait! (T60's and T2B)

Erick | M/V Sea Lion | 1:00PM | August 21, 2020

This afternoon there was the treat of rain in the sky but luckily it held off till later in the day. Captain Pete and I took out a great crew of passengers out to search for the local wildlife in the Salish Sea! We started by heading south. There were some early reports of Orcas down by Middle Bank of the southwestern side of San Juan Island. We headed straight there, and they were still travelling slowly parallel to the international...

Bigg's Killer Whales on our Sunset Tour!

Sarah | 08/19/2020 | M/V Sea Lion | 05:30pm

We had a lovely evening out on the water surrounded by wildlife in the Salish Sea. We had incredibly smooth water conditions and a beautiful muted light as we set out north from Friday Harbor.

Earlier in the day there had been a group of orcas reported far away from San Juan Island in Canadian waters and by the evening they had worked their way closer to San Juan Island. We quickly headed towards where we thought they might be based on...
