“Fogust” has been loud and proud this week in the San Juan Islands. We left foggy Friday Harbor and headed north in San Juan Channel. On Thursday, March 31st the single day record of Bigg’s killer whale sightings was broken in the Salish Sea. A whopping 72 Bigg’s killer whales were sighted! Needless to say, Captain Eric and I had high expectations going into Friday's trip. Captain Sarah, Alexandria, and I ventured out into the Salish Sea with a really awesome group of folks and reports of whales swimming about! We headed north into San Juan Channel and when we got to the top of San Juan Island we headed west towards the city of Sidney, BC. Along the way we spotted a few harbor porpoises in the Haro Strait and a haul out of harbor seals on a small Canadian island!

Our guests have been lucking out lately!  Bigg’s Killer Whales, with their erratic diving behavior and extended dives, can be a challenge to view at times.  However, observers who are lucky enough to see orcas locate prey and witness the gritty details of a kill easily get their fill of whale watching.  Often, killer whales with their prey can be analogous to a cat and mouse.  The process can be drawn out and grisly.  I get exhausted just watching them!

The same group of marine mammal-eating Transients (the T49Bs and T65As) that "wowed" us yesterday demonstrated their hunting prowess again today outside of Sidney, British Columbia.
