The Environmental Impacts of Prey: feat. Hunting and Breaching Bigg’s Killer Whales

Haleigh | M/V Osprey | June 8, 2022 | 12:30 pm

Today’s Classic Whale and Wildlife excursion began like most days out on the water, a few reports guiding our direction but no guarantees for what wildlife we’d find. The early-on reports directed us north up San Juan Channel towards feeding grounds known to host feeding Humpback Whales. As we made our way along Orcas Island, through President's Channel and past Waldron Island, a report of Bigg’s Killer Whales came in only 15 minutes...

Families of Bigg’s Killer Whales and Humpback Whales

Haleigh | M/V Sea Lion | May 29, 2022 | 12:30 pm

The island has been filling up with visitors as Memorial Day rings in the start of the summer season! Our classic whale watch was no disappointment for those coming to view some of the stand-out species found in our waters.

Early reports had us off the dock headed straight towards the outer islands (Patos, Sucia, Matia, Clark and Barne). With gusts of winds up to 12 knots, our vessel trudged through wavy waters spraying the port...

Humpback Whale Breaching

Humpback Whale Calf Breaches in the Gulf

Olivia | M/V Sea Lion | May 23rd, 2022 | 12:30pm

The Pacific Northwest decided to pull one of her most cliché moves by raining on a day that didn’t call for it; but off we went with happy faces ready for whatever the day brought. Heading north, we stopped at Flattop Island admiring heaps of Pigeon Guillemots with their red feet bold against the green water. Nearby we found several Harbor Seals swimming along the basalt rock as well as an adult Bald Eagle stoically looking across the...

Surprise Bigg’s Killer Whales Just Outside Friday Harbor

Maxx K. | M/V Kestrel | 05/13/2022 | 2:00pm

Today was pretty dang close to perfect. It kicked off strongly as a good hour before Kestrel untied from the jetty, two bull Bigg's Killer Whales passed directly in front of Friday Harbor. I could see their tall six ft dorsal fins cut the surface of the water through my binoculars here at the office.

When we left the harbor for our adventure tour, we decided to save the whales for last. We opted instead to start by heading out into...

Bigg's Killer Whales in the Salish Sea

Three Families of Bigg's Killer Whales and Surprise Humpback Whales!

Olivia | M/V Sea Lion | May 6th, 2022 | 12:30pm

Leaving the dock at the start of a trip is not only normal for the shoulder season, but for peak season as well. With no whales tagged in these waters, everything is found on visual sight. Today we left the dock and decided to take a chance heading north while other vessels in the Pacific Whale Watch Association were searching down south. This worked in our favor because about 20 minutes into our trip, another vessel spotted not one...

Feeding Bigg's Killer Whales and an Opportunistic Bald Eagle

Olivia | M/V Sea Lion | April 28th, 2022 | 12:30pm

Leaving the dock today, we were elated with the weeklong streak of sunny weather. Cool winds and warm skies guided us inner island towards Rosario Strait, passing heaps of bait balls and feeding Rhinoceros Auklets. Kissing the southern end of Lummi Island, we spotted black dorsal fins seemingly hugging the shoreline.

In my opinion, Lummi Island is one of the most breathtaking islands within the San Juan’s. The lush green, cliffy...

Our journey from a Hungry Gray Whale to a Bigg’s Killer Whale party!

Lauren | M/V Sea Lion | 3.24.2022 | 12:30 PM

As M/V Sea Lion headed out of Friday Harbor and into San Juan Channel, we were immediately greeted by four Steller’s sea lions swimming near the coast of Friday Harbor Labs. This “stellar” encounter set the mood for the rest of the trip. If having a wildlife encounter within the first 5 minutes of leaving the dock isn’t a good sign, then I don’t know what is!

As we headed north, we stopped in Rocky Bay and got some good looks at a handful...

Snorts and Groans from Frankenstein, a Humpback Whale!

Haleigh | M/V Sea Lion | October 7, 2021 | 12:00 pm

Today’s weather was spectacular. The water was glassy and calm everywhere we ventured, and the sun was shining with the blue sky and puffy clouds above. We began our tour southbound to scan the shallow banks within the Strait of Juan de Fuca. As we made our way through Cattle Pass, Steller’s Sea Lions bobbed up and down in the water. We saw even more of these blubberous beasts lying on Whale Rocks, some roaring while others...

Bigg’s Killer Whales Cruising Towards Victoria

Haleigh | M/V Kestrel | September 21, 2021 | 2:00 pm

Of the wildlife we see in the Salish Sea, about half of our summer inhabitants are migratory. Animals like Humpback whales, Gray whales, and Minke whales spend their summers here feeding due to the prey abundance. The other half of residential animals can be expected around the sea year round. One of those residential animals are our Bigg’s Killer Whales. Though their population ranges from the southern part of the Salish Sea all...

8 Bigg's Killer Whales by Lime Kiln State Park!

Abby | Kestrel | 5/27/2021

We suited up for our tour, the promise of a typical Washington drizzle looming off in the distance. The tide was at its lowest point, more so than I had ever seen, driving the crustaceans and nudibranchs lower on the pilings than they cared to travel. We set off on the zodiac, reports coming in about a Bigg’s killer whale family heading North on the western side of San Juan Island. As we zipped away from the harbor, heading South through San Juan Channel...
