Bigg's Orcas and a Humpback Whale in the Strait of Georgia

Monday, April 23, 2018 | M/V Sea Lion | 12:00 Noon

What a gloriously sunny Monday afternoon in the San Juan Islands! Sitting here writing this, I can feel the sunburn set in over what are probably some fresh freckles, and it makes me so excited that summer is finally (nearly) upon us! Today Captain Mike and I led a great group of folks all the way up to Point Roberts, a funny little peninsula of US land attached only to Canada, just south of Vancouver. It was a long haul up there...

Four Species of Cetaceans Encountered! Whale Watching from Friday Harbor (04/18)

Sarah – 04/18/2018 – M/V Sea Lion – 12:00pm]

Wowza, what a day of whale watching! Pre-season is one of my favorite times to be on the water because we never know what we will find out on the water. Yesterday started out pretty normally for an April day with no reports of whales as we left the dock. Captain Brian and I decided to head north towards the Canadian Gulf Islands to try our luck finding whales and other wildlife. Here in the San Juans there is no “normal” spot to begin...

Bigg's Orcas in the Sun!

Thursday, April 19, 2018 | M/V Sea Lion | 12:00 Noon

THE SUN IS OUT! Spending the winter on the island, sometimes you don’t realize how much you’ve been missing the sun until it pops through the clouds to warm your bones; today was one of those days. Happily squinting my eyes, I boarded the boat along with our amazing guests for the day and Captain Brian and I got the Sea Lion into San Juan Channel, headed north. Turning west into Spieden Channel we found ourselves surrounded by our...

Spring is Abloom and the Wildlife is Wonderful

[Tuesday, 4/17/18 – M/V Sea Lion – 12:00 – Naturalist Erick]

Another day goes by as the season of spring boldly brings us into a season of unpredictable weather, beautiful flowers and northward migration. Captain Mike and I took some folks out on this wonderful April day to go find some great wildlife. Our first stop was at Green Point on the eastern tip of Spieden Island. It was a little bit of a breezy day so all the sea lions that normally cover the rocky shore here were all in...

Active Orcas in Active Pass!

April 16, 2018 | M/V Sea Lion | 12:00 PM

Today was a very stereotypical Pacific Northwest day, with a lot of cloud-cover producing a lot of rain, but the islands were dotted so beautifully with those wispy low-lying clouds just touching the evergreens, the type of scene that made me fall in love with this area. Captain Mike, myself, and a small group of great people left Friday Harbor and made our way north through San Juan Channel. We got a great look at a large group of harbor...

Gray Whale in San Juan Channel!!!

14 April, 2018 | M/V Sea Lion | 4:00 PM

On the noon trip this day Captain Mike, Erick, and I explored a large area north of San Juan Island so when Captain Mike and I left the docks on our second trip of the day we decided to go south, and boy am I glad we did.

On our way down San Juan Channel we got word that another vessel had picked up a little-seen gray whale near Cattle Pass that was headed towards us! We continued our heading and met up with the vessel, which, by the time we...

Two Not-so-Lone Bigg's Orcas in Lopez Sound

Monday, April 9 | M/V Sea Lion | 12:00 Noon

Captain Mike and I got the Sea Lion off the docks today with a great little group of folks onboard and as we left Friday Harbor we made a plan to head south in search of orcas. Passing by Cattle Point Lighthouse we got a view of a colony of Steller’s sea lions hauled out on Whale Rocks with a juvenile bald eagle perched atop! After getting a nice whiff of their stank we decided to check out Salmon Bank, an area south of San Juan Island...

A Look at Geography

Friday, April 13th [M/V Sea Lion- Naturalist Alexandria)

On our trip we were treated to  some incredibly playful Stellar Sea Lions off of Spieden Island!  There must have been upwards of 20 or so Sea Lions in the water swimming and breaching right in front of us!  It was incredibly entertaining to see these guys swimming and jumping and putting on quite the show for entertained spectators aboard Sea Lion.

After we checked out Spieden Island we headed north to continue our search...

Springtime Wildlife Sightings - Steller Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, & Harbor Porpoises Galore!

[Saturday, 4/14/18 – 12:00 – M/V Sea Lion – Naturalist Erick]

Like most places in the northern hemisphere springtime is about balance. We get some bright sunny days where all the flowers seem to sing spring, and other days we get the classic drizzly Pacific Northwest weather. Today on our noon tour Captain Mike, Piper, and I took a group out on M/V Sea Lion to search for wildlife among these amazing islands. We headed north in San Juan Channel. We made our first stop just a little...
