Treadmilling Transients: An Afternoon with Two Bigg's Killer Whale Matrilines

Olivia Ellman | M/V Osprey | June 25th, 2025 | 12:30 PM

We had another great day on the water this afternoon, where we got to spend time with two different Bigg’s Killer Whale matrilines that I have not seen before! Before leaving the dock, we had reports of these whales off the eastern side of Orcas Island, so we began traveling in that direction. Along our interisland cruise, we made a stop to see a number of harbor seals outside of Obstruction Pass. We got to see a few inch their way into the...

Lauren | M/V Osprey | Thursday, June 19th, 2025 | 12:30 PM

Although Bigg’s Killer Whales usually just travel in their individual matrilines (mom and immediate offspring). We will occasionally see multiple groups gathering together for mating and socialization. These groupings can last a few hours, a few days, and sometimes even a few weeks. For the last several days, the T065B’s and the T075B’s have been seen traveling together. These two moms, who are both in their early 30’s have been traveling...

T65B and T75B Bigg's Killer Whale Matrilines Spend Another Afternoon Together

Olivia Ellman | M/V Osprey | Friday, June 20th, 2025 | 12:30 PM

Today’s Classic tour gave us a beautiful cruise through San Juan and Spieden Channels. We began by heading north out of Friday Harbor, and searched along the coastlines for wildlife. Once we turned West into Spieden Channel, we soon saw  boats in the distance near Henry Island that were with a group of two different Bigg’s Killer Whale matrilines! Based on photo ID, we knew these were the T65Bs and T75Bs. We have seen these families...

Bigg's Killer Whales Bring Us a Surprise, plus a Grey Whale Guest!

Olivia Ellman | M/V Kestrel | Tuesday, June 17th, 2025 | 2:00 PM

Today's afternoon Adventure Whale Watch was easily one of my top trips all season. We left Friday Harbor and headed south in San Juan Channel, soon stopping at Goose Island to view harbor seals and many sea birds. We continued through Cattle Pass and into Salmon Bank, where we searched for signs of baleen whales among some bait balls. With no signs of whales here, we decided to keep moving south towards some reports of Bigg's Killer...

Bald Eagle Hunts a Salmon and Bigg’s Killer Whales Say Hello

Olivia Ellman | M/V Kestrel | Monday, June 16th, 2025 | 2:00 PM

Our afternoon trip was full of wildlife as we traveled among many of the San Juan Islands. After stopping to view some harbor seals on one of the Wasp Islands, we continued traveling along the western side of Orcas Island through President’s Channel. We suddenly saw a bald eagle dive into the water, and begin swimming to shore! Once the eagle emerged from the water, it revealed its catch of a large salmon. The eagle hauled the salmon...

A Search for Whales Brings us all the way up to Active Pass!

Kelly | M/V Osprey | Saturday, June 14th 2025 | 1:00 PM

We had no time to waste! The only whales reported in our area were very far away in the Canadian Gulf Islands. We took a hard left out of Friday Harbor and pointed north up San Juan Channel. We enjoyed the gorgeous scenery as we slipped over the border and into Canadian water. Some guests were lucky enough to catch a few looks at harbor porpoise as we crossed Boundary Pass and entered Plummer Sound. Thankfully, we heard from other boats in...

Lummi Island Bigg's Killer Whale Cruise

Olivia Ellman | M/V Osprey | June 6th, 2025 | 12:30 PM

Today was another beautiful day on the water for our afternoon Classic Whale Watch. We left Friday Harbor and began traveling east between Lopez and Shaw Islands in search of wildlife. We had some reports of killer whales further east, so we cruised interisland, through Peavine Pass and towards Lummi Island. As we got into Rosario Strait, we got to see a cool marine layer of fog over the water, but luckily this didn’t impede our visibility...

2 Killer Whale Families Group Up & Swim Past Patos Lighthouse

Kelly | M/V Osprey| Monday, May 26th 2025 | 2pm

We took a left outside Friday harbor and were instantaneously treated to a look at a bald eagle sitting in the trees by Friday Harbor Labs. This area always seems to be a hotspot for these impressive raptors. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a nest close by, tucked away in the evergreens. We stopped for some quick looks at harbor seals lounging on the rocks next to Jones Island, always delighting us with there ever so elegant sausage bodies.

11 Bigg's Killer Whales Socialize in Boundary Pass!

Kelly | M/V Osprey | Monday, May 5th 2025 | 2pm

The harbor was heating up in the mid-day sun as we waited to depart on the M/V Osprey. I Certainty appreciated the the cool breeze as we picked up speed and headed north up San Juan Channel. Without wasting any time we b-lined it to a reported location of 11 Bigg's killer whales. We met up with these whales in Boundary Pass, just south of the Canadian border. This group was made up of multiple families including:

T65B's

  • T65B Chunk 1993 F
  • T65B1 Birdsall...

Uncharted Biggs Killer Whales outside Sansum Narrows

Kelly | M/V Sea Lion | April 1st, 2025 | 12:30pm

We left Friday harbor with nothing but a loose shore-based report of killer whales far up north which was now unfortunately now 2 hours old…Yikes! I stayed hopeful that something would be discovered either by us or the other whales watching vessel’s searching during our 3-4 hour tour. Something was found indeed! 5 Bigg’s killer whales were reported in Sansum Narrows, the passage between mainland Vancouver Island and Saltspring Island. This location...
