Great Trip with Brother Transient Orcas Near Lopez!

Jordan | M/V Sea Lion | 07/02/2021 2:00pm

We got so lucky today!

Captain Pete and I headed out of Friday Harbor and found whales in only a few minutes! This is an incredibly rare occurrence, so we were feeling really excited.

As we slowly approached the scene, we identified the whales as the two brothers: T77C and T77D also known as Neftali and Alcyon! We found then near Lopez Island and they led as all along the coastline down the San Juan Channel. They were cruising along, looking...

Gregarious Killer Whales off Waldron Island

Maxx K. | M/V Sea Lion | 07/01/2021 | 2:00

It was a gorgeous afternoon on the water today, a perfect 70 degrees and calm as could be as we left Friday harbor with a boatful of excited guests. We turned northward, heading up and through the San Juan channel following rumors of whales approaching Waldron Island. We passed Jones Island and Orcas on our journey, weaving between the islands as they slowly began to rise further out of the water with the outgoing tide.

Biggs Killer Whales on our Adventure Trip

M/V Kestrel | Thursday, July 1st | Naturalist Alexandria

We had a great day today on MV Kestrel! Captain Eric and myself loaded on our wonderful guests, and headed out into a San Juan Channel. We were excited to hear rumors I’ve orcas a bit  north east of us. As we headed out we made a left into San Juan Channel and the adventure began!

We kept our eyes out for eagles and harbor seals, and we are fortunate enough even to find an eagle nest to show everybody how long with you...

Feeding Frenzy with 4 Minke Whales, Harbor Seals, and Pelagic Birds!

Haleigh | M/V Sea Lion | June 28, 2021 | 2:00pm

Given today was one of the hottest days on San Juan Island, our boat full of passengers stoked to be on the water. The cool breeze hit us as we left Friday Harbor and the chill set in as we traveled southbound through San Juan Channel, passing harbor porpoise along the way. Entering the Strait of Juan de Fuca felt like an entirely new land. It was more than 30 degrees cooler and the hazy sky blurred all of the distinguishing features...

Going the distance for Orcas- Our Trek to Admiralty Inlet

What a day today’s trip turned out to be! As we left Friday Harbor there was no doubt about it- it was a hot summer day!  Today was one of those days that had made history for how hot it was, but little did we know that we would be making history for more than just that today!

Captain Pete had been working with other captains on the water to see if there were any reports of whales in our vicinity.  It was sounding like there were some southeast of us, but pretty far away… we decided...

Humpback Whale in San Juan Channel at Sunset

Haleigh | M/V Osprey | June 26, 2021 | 5:30pm

The Salish Sea supports an abundant, diverse ecosystem full of lengthy kelp beds, speckled phytoplankton, small schooling fish, and our larger marine mammals! Using our knowledge of the environment, we can predict where certain animals will congregate or where they’ll be moving. Combining this knowledge, we are further directed by visual sightings reporting cetaceans or pinnipeds to the Pacific Whale Watch Association. By sharing...

Up Close and Personal with Minke Whales

Haleigh | M/V Osprey | June 25, 2021 | 5:30pm

Tonight was a gorgeous, glassy evening on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. What normally is a body of rippling waves ended up being flat and silent, perfect for spotting wildlife! We journeyed south of Friday Harbor, down through San Juan Channel and into the Strait. With the perfect conditions on the water we saw a literal sea of birds! Hundreds of Rhinoceros Auklets, Common Murres, Glaucous-winged gulls, and Heerman’s gulls were scattered...

Humpback Whale surfacing for air

Heading to Henry for a Humpback!

Today was a great day to get out on the water!  The sun was shining, the summer weather was upon us, and to keep with the theme of Summer- there was a Humpback whale just a short trip away!

Captain Pete and I were excited that we had a report of a humpback whale in Haro Strait before our trip left, and we were hoping that if this whale cooperated by the time we worker our way north through San Juan Channel that we would be able to cut across the northern side of San Juan Island and...

Humpback Whale Cruises the Haro Strait

Olivia | M/V Osprey | June 25th, 2021 | 12:30pm

With the sunshine on our side, we immediately decided to make the decision to head north around the top of San Juan Island with some rumors of a baleen whale lurking in the air. This brought us all the way towards County Park, just north of Lime Kiln Lighthouse. Coming on scene, we quickly discovered that this baleen was none other than a Humpback Whale!

This filter feeding ocean giant was slow traveling north along the westside...

The Best Kind of Mugging by 2 Bigg’s Killer Whales

Haleigh | M/V Osprey | June 24, 2021 | 5:30pm

I’ll likely say this throughout the summer -- sunsets are the absolute best time to be on the water. As we leave the dock and pass in and around the islands, everything around us is either sparkling or glowing. Tonight’s excursion lived up to the magic.

Our beginning route led us eastbound on an inter-island expedition. We were following prior reports of a “T-Party” traveling through the San Juan Channel. Bigg’s Killer Whales are...
