Today was such a good day! Captain Gabe and I headed south through the San Juan Channel towards reports of transient whales near the Olympic Peninsula. We first stopped by Whale Rocks and saw some Steller sea lions on the rocks! It was really fun to see these massive animals lounging and enjoying the sun streaming through the cloudy skies. There were also harbor seals sitting nearby flopping around.
Then we sped off further south, bearing wavy waters in search of whales. We reached the peninsula and ventured deep into Discovery Bay where the foggy skies hovered over the waters. Then, suddenly we found our whales!
We found the T65As, a lovely pod of transient killer whales. It was so much fun to watch them swimming around. They seemed to get really excited about something as they suddenly started splashing around and did a few headstands, keeping just their heads in the water as they threw their bodies in the air!
Eventually we headed back towards harbor and the waves were even more wavy, making our boat ride like a roller coaster ride! What an adventure! Half way home, we found two humpback whales swimming around Salmon Bank off the south point of San Juan Island. It was so much fun watching them surfacing pretty close to our boat! You could even here them breathe!
Finally, we went back to home, happy with the day’s journey.
