Biggs Killer Whales Off Waldron Island

Naturalist Alexandria | M/V Sea Lion | 12:00 PM | June 18th, 2019

Today was a great day on the water!  We started out the day with a report of Bigg’s Killer Whales off Waldron Island.  We decided to head north to go check out these reports.

Today was a pretty windy day out on the water so we were happy to hear that conditions were calmer through San Juan Channel and up to Boundary Pass where these whales were spotted.  This was great news because based on the wind trends we had reported, going north was going to provide the best conditions- and best chance of seeing whales!

We headed north up San Juan Channel and worked our way up through President’s Channel.  As we were making our way up to boundary pass we passed a few eagles that were soaring above us.  It was a beautiful day to be out on the water and these eagles were just the first of many awesome things we were going to see.

We got up to Boundary Pass and met up with those orcas!  We slowly approached these animals in order to ensure we got respectful looks at these animals. We spent a nice amount of time with them, and got some incredible looks.

When it was time to head back to Friday Harbor we stopped at White Rock and got some fantastic looks at harbor seals hauled out on the rocks.  They looked like the cute little “rock sausages” we have affectionately began calling them.

We enjoyed the rest of the trip as we headed back into harbor.  Happy to have had such great weather and wonderful looks at our orcas!
