Alexandria | Thursday, May 17, 2019 | M/V Sea Lion | 12:00 PM
We all boarded M/V Sea Lion and pushed off the dock, happy to see that the afternoon had cleared up and the threat of rain was no longer something people were worried about. As we got off the dock we headed out into San Juan Channel and then over to Rosario Strait.
Captain Pete was in constant communication with all the other captains on the water, and we were all working together to scout the area. We each chose a section of the water to check out, ensuring that each person scouted a different area and maximized our chances of seeing anything while out there today.
We headed south down Rosario Strait when we got word of a potential blow a little further south of us. We headed straight to that area and as we were approaching we were lucky enough to see some awesome flailing Humpback glances!
This individual was amazingly entertaining and was tail lobbing and splashing at the surface of the water giving us quite the show! This was some of the most incredible surface action I’ve seen from a Humpback! They would only take shallower dives which meant that we got many awesome views of this individual at the surface many times!
We also had the opportunity to see numerous Bald Eagles as they were sitting at the top of the green tree line as well as two on a rocky haul out at Bird Rock.
We even got glances of harbor porpoise and 2 steller sea lions throughout this trip!
Any day where we hit the water with no firm reports, and are able to find a whale, especially a splashy humpbacks- is quite a great day!
Until Next Time,
Naturalist Alexandria
