We left the dock on a beautiful, cloudy Friday afternoon. There had not been any whale sightings yet for the day, so we strapped on our binos and kept an eye out for anything remotely whale-like. We cruised north through San Juan Channels potting harbor seals and bald eagles. After some time, we were notified that a humpback whale known as BCX0915, better known as “Fallen Knight” was nearby, on the west side of Orcas Island.
We had some great looks and were able to spend a considerable time with this whale. The kiddos on board were in awe, and adults cheered as each breathing pattern ended with a fluke-up dive.
After viewing this humpback we ended our tour by cruising past Crane Island to see one of the rarest bird species in the world; Pinkus Flamingus. Thanks to Captain Michael, we were able to see this incredibly unique mating pair of plastic yard decorations. The crowd cheered and laughed, knowing they had been had. The couple who owns the house honked their air horn and waved cheerfully at guests. What an incredible experience. Thank you, Captain Michael, for keeping the laughter alive.
