This past evening we all boarded M/V Sea Lion for the first official Sunset Whale Watching Trip of the season! Myself and Captain Mike were both excited, as this is such a beautiful time to be on the water.
When we initially headed out, there were no firm reports about what was happening on the water, but Captain Mike had an awesome game plan, and it certainly paid off! We headed east towards Rosario Strait, and within minutes of being in search mode, we spotted two humpback blows in the distance! As we approached we were excited to notice that these humpbacks were not doing incredibly deep dives which meant that we got to enjoy a lot of surface time with them! I would estimate that not more than 2 minutes at the most went by between their dives! They appeared to be casually having an evening dinner, and we were thrilled to be invited to the festivities! It was amazing! We stayed with these humpbacks for more than 30 minutes, and then began heading home.
On the way home we were all treated to an amazing sunset, as the incredibly vivid evening colors all collided on the horizon.
Until Next Time,
Naturalist Alexandria
