What a spectacular sunset this evening! We had a small group of about 9 passengers who were able to enjoy the evening with myself and Captain Brian. The best part? We didn’t have to travel far until we saw Bigg’s Killer Whales! We first viewed the T124A’s in the Wasp Passage around McConnell and Yellow Islands. They moved slowly through the Wasp Islands until they met up in the San Juan Channel with (SURPRISE) another family group! Here we saw the T65B’s who happened to have T65A2 traveling with them (the nephew of T65B) down from the Spieden Channel into Rocky Bay. This was interesting as T65B and her young calf separated momentarily before reconnecting with them later on.
Once the two family groups joined up, we had ourselves a very social T party! This was incredible. Lots of spy hops, lobtails, pectoral fins, rubbing and rolling- they are very affectionate. It was fun listening to Brian (our owner/operator) discuss these whales with our small group and seeing how much joy he gets after so many years in the business. This lasted quite a while as we all just sat in awe at the playful, social, and stunning marine mammals that are not so different from us. Might I add this all happened in the golden rays of the sunset? I’ve said it before, and I will a million more, come join in the beauty of our sunset tours as they are a staff favorite for good reason!
