With our noon departure today out of Friday Harbor, we had both the Sea Lion and the Kittiwake going out. Captain Mike with Naturalists Kevin and Caitlin on the Sea Lion and Captain Jim with Naturalist Aimee on the Kittiwake had full boats. We left the harbor and headed south toward whale rocks. This is a common place to find Harbor Seals hauled out and see Stellar Sea Lions. On our trip today we saw both Harbor Seals and Stellar Sea Lions hanging out down there. Stellar Sea Lions are the biggest seals in the eared seal family. Males can weigh up to 2,200lbs! After checking them out we headed west toward Salmon Bank(This is a common place to find Minke and Humpback whales.) On the way out there we were seeing Harbor Porpoises. As soon as we got on the seen we spotted the Minke. After watching for a while, we determined we were watching several Minke whales! Minke whales are pretty amazing creatures because they can swim so fast. These guys can reach speeds up to 22 knots. They are also the second smallest baleen whale. After spending some time with the whales we headed back over to Long Island to check out a Bald Eagle's nest and a Bald Eagle who was perched on top of the tree. We started to make our way back up north toward Friday Harbor to end out trip. It was a very successful day out on the water, seeing a very nice array of wildlife the San Juans have to offer.
