Mysterious and Magical Minkes

[Alexandria – 10/01/2017 – M/V Sea Lion – 12:00pm]

Magical and Mysterious Minkes

Minke whales are perhaps one of the more mysterious cetaceans in our oceans, and it is always a rare treat when we are able to see them out on the water… but on this trip we were treated to two different Minkes and were able to watch them for almost an hour!  It was basically a Minke Party!

Minke Party Details:

When?

Sunday, October 1st, 2017

Who?

The fantastic group visiting the San Juan Islands going Whale Watching aboard M/V Sea Lion, as well as Captain Gabe, Naturalist Rachel, and Naturalist Alexandria

And… the guests of Honor- Two Minkes!

The first: Believed to be a juvenile male Minke, as he was bigger than many juveniles but not quite large enough to be considered full grown, but showed lots of energy!

The second: A full grown adult Minke.

Where?

This party took place in the Haro Strait, right off of the southwest corner of the island.  We stayed with out first Minke as he worked his way north from the south tip of Lopez and up toward the west side of San Juan Island.  We then met up with out second Minke on our way back to the south tip of San Juan Islands, who eventually continued south.

After Party?

After two incredible Minke sightings, the excursion took one last final stop at Whale Rocks and enjoyed some entertaining Stellar Sea Lions having their own celebration, loudly growling and splashing and celebrating their return to the San Juan Islands after a summer spent in Alaska.
