What an amazing day today was! Guests eagerly boarded M/V Sea Lion with the crew Captain Gabe, and Naturalists Sarah and Alexandria. As we hit the water we were all very excited that within about 10 minutes of being out we saw Biggs Killer Whales (also known as Transient Orcas). As we approached the family of orcas we confirmed that these were in fact the T49A family.
One of the highlights from today was the amazing views we got of T49A1, the eldest male son in the family. It was incredible to see this 17 year old’s gigantic dorsal fin swimming by! We got some amazing looks at this family- at one point they were hunting for lunch and it was quite an action packed opportunity to see some great surface action! What an absolute treat!
The day wasn’t over yet though! We headed south down San Juan Channel and out into the Haro Strait. After heading into more open water we saw a gigantic blow in the distance and knew it had to be a Humpback whale! We ventured towards it and were treated to some amazing breaths and looks with this incredible creature the size of a school bus filled with 7 African Elephants!
After spending a nice amount of time with this gorgeous creature we slowly turned and headed home. On the trip back we were treated to some incredibly entertaining looks at some Steller Sea Lion’s that were hauled out on Whale Rocks right at the southern mouth of San Juan Channel!
This trip had quite the trifecta- Orcas, Humpbacks, and Steller Sea Lions! What an amazing day!
Until Next Time,
Naturalist Alexandria
