When we first headed out on M/V Kestrel it was quite a rainy morning. Nonetheless we got suited up and boarded M Kestrel- after all a little rain never stopped us here in the great Pacific Northwest!
We first headed north up San Juan Channel, checking out some Harbor Seals on White Rock. Those little rock sausages were quite the happy campers, all relaxing on the rocks, clearly unbothered by the rain. We crossed over the northern part of San Juan Island after jetting by Spieden Island and headed to some reports Captain Mike had received about Resident Orcas on the West Side of the Island in Haro Strait.
As we headed south down Haro Strait we saw dorsal fins in the distance. Right as we got closer the sky opened up and this crazy thing happened- we saw sunshine! It was beautiful! A rainy day had suddenly turned into a sunny afternoon and to top it off we were in the company of orcas!
We hung out with a few different groups and eventually continued south completely circumnavigated San Juan Island, before returning to Friday Harbor!
Until Next Time,
Naturalist Alexandria
