San Juan Island Snow and Orcas

Both our Southern Resident killer whales and Transient killer whales were sighted several times in the past few days. Our Resident (fish-eating) Orcas have been in and out of South Puget Sound, giving our friends in the Seattle area a great opportunity to see Orcas in the wild right in their neck of the woods. Check out these photos with west Seattle in the background. Very cool! And again this morning (as I write this!), we have reports of killer whales near Bainbridge & Vashon Islands.

Transient Orcas traveled right past Port Townsend on December 20, which has not happened in quite some time!

And perhaps the most exciting report in the Pacific Northwest has been our snow! San Juan Island received it’s first real snow fall of the winter. The San Juan Islands and greater Puget Sound area does not get that much snow, surprisingly. We enjoy a relatively mild climate all year-round. It doesn't get very hot in the summer and winter days are usually 35 to 45 degrees. It was very exciting to wake up with snow! The kids on San Juan Island made snowmen & snow angles during their 2-hour delayed start from school.

Washington State Ferry departs Friday Harbor in the snow.
