With our noon departure today Captain Mike and Naturalists Aimee and Kevin headed south with their guests. While heading south guests spotted a Sea Lion surfacing in the water. After getting a few good looks, Kevin and Aimee determined they were looking at a California Sea Lion. California Sea Lions are smaller than the Stellar Sea Lions however full grown males can get up to eight feet long. Moving along, a bald eagle was spotted on Whale Rocks and we decided to stop and get a look. Cruising along the backside of rocks the guests got great views of some Harbor Seals and the Bald Eagle diving for some fish. Traveling along we finally met up with the Orcas by Eagle Point. J16, Slick, was the first Orca spotted. Soon after spotting her we noticed a large male coming toward the boat. After he surfaced a few times, we determined it was J26, Big Mike. After Slick and Mike passed the boat a few times, two more joined the group. The group of four we were looking at was Slicks family. Slicks family includes herself, her son Big Mike, and her two daughters Echo and Alki. (Orcas travel with their family. Once they are born they will never leave their mother. So that is why we saw all of Slicks family traveling very close and playing together.) Soon the "Cookie Clan", consisting of Rhapsody, Oreo, Doublestuff, and Cookie, moved toward us and the guests were able to get some incredible views of them. The guests were lucky to see some breaching, cartwheels, and pectoral slaps. There were whales all over moving inland and we followed the Orcas up to Lime Kiln Lighthouse. From there we broke away from the group and started to head north toward Spieden Island. We visit this island because of the exotic game, Fallow Deer and Mouflon sheep, located here. Today we were able to check out Mouflon sheep and Bald Eagles soaring high. After our whole trip today we circumnavigated San Juan Island. Our guests walked off our boat seeing a little bit of everything the San Juans have to offer! Overall it was a great day out on the water!
Sea Lion, Bald Eagles, Orcas, Oh My!
