Sunset Trip with Resident Whales on the Canadian Border! | 08/18/2018 | 5:30

Jordan | August 18, 2018 | M/V Sea Lion | 5:30 trip

What a beautiful evening trip in the San Juan Islands! As the sun started to set behind the picturesque clouds, we headed out of Friday Harbor to search for our whales. We headed south through the San Juan Channel and towards Victoria on Vancouver Island.

Before we reached Canadian waters, we found the whales! Suddenly we were surrounded by Southern Resident whales all around our boat! It was so exciting seeing the magnificent animals every which way we looked! There were even a couple breaches! Then this giant male whale swam straight towards our boat! He got so close you could hear him breathing! Then he submerged and swam right under our boat. It was crazy to think that the 30-foot whale was right underneath us!

It’s always really exciting to see these magnificent animals swimming free in their natural habitat. The view was overwhelming.

Eventually we headed back towards Friday Harbor. But, along the way we stopped and looked at some Steller sea lions! These amazing creatures lumbered around the small island barking at each other as comparably smaller seals watched lazily from nearby rocks.

What a lovely day full of much excitement.
