[M/V Sea Lion- 5/5- Naturalist Alexandria]
Aboard M/V Sea Lion guests were treated to a gorgeous sunny Spring day. Captain Mike, Naturalists Piper and myself, Naturalist Alexandria, all boarded for an exciting trip on the water as the sun shined down on us for one of the first of our perfect spring days of the year.
We were lucky enough to be treated to some amazing Transient Sightings while on our trip! We saw a family of three orcas hanging out north off the shore of Waldron Island. They treated us to a great thirty or so minutes allowing us to watch them swim, and dive all while jumping and swimming and enjoying a social afternoon swim.
We got to stay with them for a nice chunk of time before we headed a little further north to check out some harbor seals and Stellar sea lions. They were all hauled out on one large rock, and as many of our new friends aboard M/V Sea Lion pointed out- we certainly could smell them before we even laid eyes on them! We were very fortunate to get to see these Stellar sea lions before they head north up to Alaska for the summer.
After enjoying some entertainment provided by some awesome breaches and playful noises by the sea lions, we headed back to our Transient orcas to see if we couldn’t catch a few more minutes with them. To our excitement Captain Mike was able to locate them again, and we were treated to another twenty minutes or so of some incredible surface activity from this transient family.
Two encounters with an orca family, stellar sea lions, harbor seals, a few bald eagles and a lot of gorgeous sunshine were the perfect recipe for this awesome trip!
Until Next Time,
Naturalist Alexandria
