Today guests aboard M/V Sea Lion were treated to an awesome day out on the water with a humpback whale!
The trip started out gorgeous, it was a sunny day and the islands were looking photogenic as ever! Guests boarded M/V Sea Lion and headed north beginning our search for whales. Captain Mike received reports of humpbacks on the east side of Orcas Island, so we headed over to Rosario Straight to see what we could find! Sure enough once we got on scene our first views were of a picture perfect fluke of our humpback! We were quickly excited to realize that this humpback was exhibiting more of a traveling behavior, thus treating us to shallower dives- because of this we got to enjoy a lot of surface time with this humpback!
We spent 40 minutes or so on scene with this humpback, being treated to lots of surface action in the form of huge exhalations and some incredible fluke dives! This humpback stayed with us for quite a bit, until eventually we left him to enjoy his lunchtime stroll, and headed on to see what else we could find! Captain Mike found us some ADORABLE “rock sausages” that were all hauled out on a rock formation just off Blakely Island.
One of the coolest parts of today was that we all were able to travel around Orcas Island, something that we rarely get to do! This made for some gorgeous views. And a great opportunity to see a lot of different islands that we don’t as commonly get to see!
Sunshine, San Juans, and a humpback- what a gorgeous day!
Until Next Time,
