Surprise orcas nearby!

MV Osprey- Naturalist Alexandria- Monday, June 21st, 2021- 5:30

We had a wonderful time today onboard MV Osprey. As we boarded onto this vessel we knew it was going to be a gorgeous evening. The sun was shining and as far as Washington standards go it had been a warm toasty day, and the thought of being cooling off out on the water was the perfect plan for the evening. As we boarded onto the vessel we left the dock with naturalists Laura, Maxx and Alexandria.

As we headed up San Juan channel we were lucky enough to spot some harbor porpoise briefly swimming by. Continuing north we knew of a sighting of orcas up towards Jones island, and we wanted to do some investigating.

We eagerly continued towards those reports and were certainly not disappointed. As we approached we were met by a couple of transient orcas that were hunting looking for a nice harbor seal for dinner.

We were fortunate enough to be one of the only boats on scene with these animals and have some amazing looks at them as they scan to the area for harbor seals eventually locating one and continuing to snack on it. While this can at times be sad to think about, it is incredibly important to remember that these transient orcas need to eat and this is all part of the circle of life.

Not only were the whales amazing on this trip but all the guests had such great questions about what we got to see and the behaviors we witnessed! It was a very nice evening!

Until next time,
