(7/15/17- M/V Sea Lion- 1:30 PM and 5:30 PM)
Another day on the water with whale calves! We saw the same two families of whales on both our afternoon and sunset trip departing from Friday Harbor, the T34’s and part of the T37’s.
These individual whales have been hanging out in near the San Juan Islands for the past few weeks, but today they were North of San Juan Island in Canadian waters. On our first trip we watched the whales in the lower portion of the Strait of Georgia. By the time we left for our second trip the whales were near the city of Vancouver, so we had a long haul to see those whales, but thankfully we were able to make it and all of our guests were please we went the extra mile for them to be able to see the orcas. Today was a humbling experience that reminded us that these animals can and will travel about 100 miles a day, so every time we get to see them we are fortunate.
Both trips we watched the two families as they traveled slowly North. Generally, families with smaller calves tend to travel a bit slower in order to accommodate the little ones. It was great to see all the whales traveling together in a close knit group and surfacing in front of the British Columbia Coastal Range mountains. Overall, it was a great day out on the water with a good group of guests who were in it to win it!
