Transients in the Strait of the Georgia

Today, M/V Kittiwake had the opportunity to spread its wings and fly! This was Kittiwake's inaugural trip this season, and I was so excited to be back on the water in one of San Juan Safari's flagship vessels. She's been with us since the beginning - so many wonderful whale sightings have happened on board this beauty. Today was no exception!

On our 2pm charter, we ventured north through San Juan Channel to explore the waters north of Patos Island in the Strait of Georgia. We heard rumblings about Transients traveling through the area, so we set off to investigate for ourselves. After a beautiful cruise through the eye candy that is the San Juan Islands, we were able to catch up with a pod of Transients as they were traveling through the channel. They were relatively relaxed and mellow in their behavior, so we had plenty of opportunity to enjoy their surfacings and their graceful movement through the water. Mount Baker loomed in the background of many of our sightings, and it was certainly a memory that will be ingrained in the mind of our guests, and myself and Captain Gabe included!

Who knows where these Transients will be tomorrow! The beauty, and the intrigue, of this species is that we never know where they'll show up next. Strait of Juan de Fuca? Rosario? Guess we will have to wait until tomorrow to find out!

Come out and join us - our tours provide plenty of excitement, scenery, and once-in-a-lifetime memories. Plus, you might even learn something new about the area and how we can all do our part to protect the beautiful species that is the killer whale.
