Humpback Whale surfacing for air

2 Humpback Whales near Stewart Island

Haleigh | M/V Sea Lion | July 17, 2021 | 2:00pm

Today’s conditions were pretty perfect. We set out on the water traveling northbound through San Juan Channel. Earlier reports of two unidentified Humpback Whales heading along the west side of San Juan Island through Haro Strait meant it was a race against the clock to reach them before they crossed over the Canadian Border. We zoomed by Spieden Island, watch as nonnative Mouflon sheep, Sika deer, and Fallow deer scampered across the...

Porpoising Orca Extravaganza throughout the Islands!

Jordan | M/V Osprey | 07/15/2021 5:30pm

This was one of the most Orca-tastic days ever!!

Captain Gabe, the crew and I headed out of Friday Harbor, towards Lopez Island and essentially found orca whales immediately!

A large group of at least 3 socializing transient killer whale pods led us up the channel, through the islands and up into East Sound of Orcas Island. Throughout this time, the group of Orcas separated, and we followed part of the group further into the harbor.

We...

Bigg's Killer Whales

Wild and Windy Afternoon with Bigg’s Killer Whales

Maxx K. | M/V Sea Lion | 07/15/2021 | 2:00pm

The wind forecast wasn’t super promising today: 15 mile/hour winds were being funneled into the Juan de Fuca from the west and an ebbing tide meant a very choppy three to four foot sea. When we left Friday Harbor we turned right, south through the San Juan Channel and towards rumors of several families of Bigg’s Killer Whales that had reunited with one another in the middle of the slosh. With our hull pounding against the surging waves...

The T065A's are "Bigg" Instigators of Curiosity

Abby | Kestrel | 7/15/2021

As if I thought my orca encounters couldn’t get any better, BAM! Today happened…

I suited up in fleece-lined pants, ready to take on the wind and waves that were about to disenchant the calm, put-together look I had so carefully compiled this morning. Weather reports came in of five-foot swells out in Haro Strait, and, as if right on cue, so did the killer whale reports. Captain Eric and I held on as we zoomed through San Juan Channel, 18 guests unaware...

Transient Killer Whales Swimming Against the Current Beneath the Deception Pass Bridge!

Jordan | M/V Kestrel | 07/11/2021 10:00pm

This trip was super unique! I’ve never seen orca behavior quite like this before.

The day began with a beautiful boat ride out of Friday Harbor and down the San Juan Channel. We passed Cattle Point lighthouse and emerged out into open waters.

Heading toward the East, we could see the distant islands grow closer and closer. Finally we arrived at Deception Pass, a fantastic area with huge rocky cliffs and lush forests. Here, we saw something...

Transient Orcas Around Deception Pass!

Jordan | M/V Kestrel | 07/11/2021 10:00pm

What an incredible trip today.

The day was perfectly sunny as Captain Eric and I hopped on the boat and headed between Shaw and Lopez Island. We wound around the Islands and through Lopez pass as we came out into the open waters of the Rosario Strait. The distant fog bank hid the coastline and made the seas look never-ending.

As we entered the fog, we found ourselves along the coastline of Fidalgo Island and suddenly there were orcas! A large...

T137s Near Lummi Island!

Jordan | M/V Osprey | 07/09/2021 5:30pm

This day was absolutely wonderful.

Captain Brian, Naturalist Alexandria and I booked it off the dock in our nice big vessel and headed out towards adventure. We cruised between Islands and northeast until we reached Peavine Pass. Slowly, we enjoyed the narrow channel and emerged into the Rosario Strait.

Then, just around the corner, we saw orcas! So cool! This beautiful family of orcas cruised along the shoreline and seemed to catch a seal...

Spectacular Orca Hunting Encounter Near Anacortes!

Jordan |m/v Kestrel |07/08/2021| 2:00pm

Today was definitely one of my favorite trips of the season. Just want to start by saying thank you to all my wonderful guests! Your passion and intrigue made the trip even better!

The day began as Captain Eric and I headed East out of Friday Harbor, in between Blakely Island and Decatur and then out towards Anacortes. We sped past Anacortes and around Guemes Island. Here, we found Orcas!

We shortly identified them as the T34s and T37s! These...
