The M/V "Sea Lion" again went south from our Friday Harbor docks in hopes of locating minke whales. And again we were rewarded with great views of a very active minke whale. The beast kept lunging for schooling bait fish, flushing up the dense sea bird flocks that were competing for the same food source.

What an exciting day on the water! For the afternoon and evening trip, we got to hang out with some pretty speedy transient orcas. With eager guests, Captain Jim and myself departed on M/V Kittiwake. As soon as we got out of the harbor area, our guests were scanning the tree line for Bald Eagles. Just another great day out on the water! Captain Mike, myself, and our small group of passengers were able to enjoy a very peaceful sunset tour complete with glistening seas and Minke Whales! As we cruised south through San Juan Channel, Captain Mike, Naturalist Caitlin, and myself couldn't help but notice how calm it was on the water! Even though the tides are extreme today because of the summer solstice, the water was calm as could be. As we continued into the Strait of Juan De Fuca, we found a cluster of sea birds, which usually leads to Minke whales! This theory did not lead us astray, as we saw several Minkes right over Salmon Bank!

We brought in the start of a new summer with great weather on the water today! The same group of marine mammal-eating Transients (the T49Bs and T65As) that "wowed" us yesterday demonstrated their hunting prowess again today outside of Sidney, British Columbia. Today’s tour was a bit different than usual, yet so refreshing! With no whale reports since the night before, we took our tour to the inner islands.
