3 Pods of Transient Orcas Plus Mother & Calf Humpbacks for Mother's Day!

What a beautiful day!

Captain Pete and I headed out of Friday Harbor with all our new friends and headed north through the San Juan Channel. The sun was shining high in the sky, so it made everything look extra blue and gorgeous today. The water stood completely still and flat.

As we arrived at Waldron Island, we saw our first blow! The crystal-clear surface water broke as the first hump emerged. We found two humpback whales! In fact, it was a mother and calf! Perfect for Mother’s Day! We watched in awe as the massive 45-foot whale led her baby through the waters searching for food. The calf would pop up a bit more than his mother because his lungs had not had time to grow too much in just a few months! But his mother urged him to practice holding his breath up to 7 minutes at a time.

Eventually we continued on our way and headed towards the Canadian border! Here, we found orca whales! Three pods of transient orcas all swam together, mingling and socializing as they meandered about the sea. There was one huge male in the group with his towering 6-foot dorsal fin swimming alongside his sisters, mother and cousins.  What powerful and impressive animals to behold!

Finally we headed towards home but we stopped alongside an island of rocks to take pictures of some harbor seals! They were super cute flopping around as a bald eagle watched them. He probably hoped someone would bring back a snack for him!

What a lovely day! Happy Mother’s Day everyone!
