For our evening sunset trip, we heard that the same Bigg’s Killer Whales from earlier this morning were still in range but traveling a bit further east closer to the edge of our scope. We felt it would still be worth it to our 11 passengers to see the black and white dolphins if at all possible, so off we went! Heading north through the San Juan Channel and cutting through Presidents Channel, Harbor Porpoise started swimming on the port side of our vessel.
Rounding the northern edge of Orcas Island, we finally caught site of another whale watching vessel far in the distance. Being a part of the Pacific Whale Watch Association, we knew that they were watching the same family group we hoped to see and set our eyes on that direction. Not surprising, the T37A’s started traveling 6kts east. We eventually made it there and were the only boat on scene in the calm Strait of Georgia north of Lummi Island. Engine turned off, we admired their beauty and family bond in absolute amazement. These moments are the ones that captivate us most.
The pure, silent beauty of these wild animals being completely comfortable in their element, sharing emotions, passing on skills generationally, being affectionate and real. The rawness of our earth is grounding and gives us the ability to take a step back, especially when 2020 feels extra crazy these days.
