Captain Pete and I started off the trip by heading north towards Boundary Pass where we caught word of some potential whale sightings. On our way there we decided to stop at White Rocks and catch a glimpse at some Harbor Seals. Did you know that anywhere from 10 days to 2 weeks after they give birth to their pups, the males swoop in to breed all over again? Ouch. Am I right, moms?
As we continued further up peeking into Boundary Pass, we started seeing Harbor Porpoises everywhere! I even had a woman exclaim, “You’re right! They DO look like chocolate chips popping up!” Sure enough, soon afterwards, we found a Humpback Whale named Jupiter! We watched and chatted about this beautiful baleen whale for about 10 minutes until our Captain caught word of some Bigg’s Killer Whales not too far away in Canadian Waters. Our boat came to the mutual decision to leave the feeding Humpback Whale and go catch a sight of our favorite black and white dolphins.
Near Prevost Island we came across the T65A’s as they were milling and socializing. It was nice to see T65A2 back traveling with his mother and siblings after taking a week vacation to hang with his aunt and cousins. He is a spunky 15 years old, so maybe mom needed a break as well? These males will typically stay with their mother’s their entire life, but it is not unusual for them to travel with other family members periodically. Being one of my favorite family groups to watch in the area with their wee little calf and seeing a Humpback with its very distinguished tail fluke, our entire adventure boat was thrilled about this dual cetacean day!
