Humpback Whale in the Strait of Georgia!

Piper | Wednesday, July 24th, 2019 | M/V Sea Lion | 1:30PM & 5:30PM   Both of our Classic tours today aboard the M/V Sea Lion headed north into San Juan Channel and eventually made our way to the wonderful Canadian waters of the Strait of Georgia, just north of Saturna Island where we enjoyed views of Mount Baker near Bellingham, the Vancouver skyline, and Point Robert's, a funny section of the US that hangs off of Canada!    We also got to witness the majesty of an awesome humpback whale!! This humpback was having a blast traveling up and down the Strait of Georgia today, searching for all sorts of yummy zooplankton, particularly krill! Humpback whales in the North Pacific weigh in at just about 45 tons and need to eat 3,000-5,000 pounds of food every day!    While we were with the humpback we watched it reach the surface to exhale the massive amount of air kept in its lungs and refill quickly before diving below again! On the breaths when the whale wanted to go down for a nice deep dive, we got to see its flukes come up out of the water!    This humpback had a very black tail, meaning that in the ID guide in the Salish Sea, its name likely starts with BCX for British Columbia and X for the 0-20% of white pigmentation on its tail!   After a great viewing with the humpback we headed back towards Friday Harbor and on our commutes we got to see some awesome wildlife, too!
