Today was a lovely day despite the gray skies that hung over the San Juan Islands. Luckily, we had our speedy boat, the Kestrel to take us around the seas to try and see as much as possible!
Captain Mike and I journeyed up the San Juan Channel, and east through Spieden Channel. Here we stopped and found some adorable seals along a nearby rocky outcrop. They were relaxing near the surface of the water with a few baby pups! As we kept cruising alongside the island, we also spotted a bald eagle perched in a tree! Very elegant.
Then we boated by John’s Island where we saw teepees from a distance as we headed north into Canadian waters. We boated through Georgenson Pass and into the Strait of Georgia where we found two humpback whales! The were so beautiful to watch gracefully swimming by. Even though these animals are massive at forty to fifty feet long, their size doesn’t slow them down as they easily cruise through the Salish Sea waters searching for food. The two whales kept diving and popping their tails up in the air so we could see their very unique patterns!
One of the whales had two white spots on the tips of her tail and we identified her as “Heather.” Her companion had a solid black tail which we identified as “Raven.” It was really cool to see two tails of the same species looking so different!
We headed back to Friday Harbor so happy to have seen whales!
