2 Pods Mingling Near Victoria!

Jordan | M/V Sea Lion | 08/19/2021 2:00pm

So nice to get out on the boat!

Captain Pete and I grabbed our guests and headed out to sea. We heard whispers of something exciting happening over in Canada so we headed out to find out what the commotion was about.

We headed south and passed cattle point lighthouse as we rounded the southern point of San juan and headed west. Looking at a map, the Canadian border zig zags across the islands so the city of Victoria is actually south west of us! And that's exactly where we were headed. Along the way we spotted gorgeous animals like cormorants and rhinoceros auklets and harbor porpoises!

Then as we began to see bits of the city, we saw Orcas! There were so many! Some were close to our boat as some swam further out in the distance. We watched as two massive males hunted and began feeding right before our eyes! Almost in sync we saw the others in the distance also feeding! Eventually they all merged together and we figured out it was two families. Two pods named the T18s and the T60s!

Among them were 4 whales with 6-foot-tall dorsal fins! It was super impressive to watch. Their names were Galiano, Spouter, Yelnats and Onca. We watched as they socialized and continued to hunt we even saw one of the males do a headstand! He threw his whole lower body out of the water. Amazing. Then we saw a spy hop as he brought his whole head up to look around!

Eventually we continued on our journey and circumnavigated the island. Enjoying the scenery, we made our way back to the harbor. What a great day!
