On our first Osprey trip of the season and the sunniest day of the week, we decided to head south in an effort to see some orcas down by Victoria, B.C. The beauty of this day could not be matched as we continually motored through glassy seas past bellowing Steller’s Sea Lions, swimming Harbor Seals, feeding Harbor Porpoise, and tons of curious birds.
It was a good thing we had sun-soaked skies and lots of peaceful views, because those Bigg’s Killer Whales, who we eventually discovered were the T036’s and T037’s [8 in total] were continually traveling south. Not far from Dungeness Spit we started spotting black dorsal fins and sparking spouts.
We watched as these whales zig zagged around completely at ease in their home before having to start our long trek back to Friday Harbor. With lots of one-on-one education aboard our vessel, we were able to share heaps of information on the Salish Sea ecosystem and what it means to see the largest dolphin species navigating through the Strait of Juan de Fuca. We even saw Mount Rainier! Our vessel was filled with lots of galley snacks, salmon restoration conversations, returning passengers and smiling faces. This Saturday trip sure filled our cup!
